Wine pairing seems to be a delicate art – combining flavours and tastes to peform the perfect medley on a person’s palate.
Luckily for the contestants, Nederburg’s winemaster, Razvan Macici was on hand to provide tips and very helpful suggestions. He said: “Flavour must match flavour. The same goes for texture. It must not be a competition between the two elements.”
Ilse was the first to pick a wine. She randomly chose Sauvignon Blanc, a fresh, crisp wine that goes well with seafood.
Lungi chose the Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé. It has berry-like flavours that pairs well with salmon and seafood.
Manisha picked the Pongracz Rosé, a sparkling wine that complements oysters.
Khaya drew the Noble Late Harvest, a sweet dessert wine and one of Nederburg’s most renowned wines.
Deena chose the Merlot, a robust yet versatile wine with dark fruit flavours that is perfect for a roast, or pizzas and pastas.
Sarel picked the Riesling, a classic intense wine that goes well with aromatic dishes.
Jade got the Shiraz, a powerful wine with berry flavours and a spiciness to it, perfectly suited for spicy lamb dishes like souvlaki.
Sue-Ann was lucky to get the “the king of the red wines” - a Cabernet Sauvignon. Razvan said that wine loves red meat.
Thys picked the Chardonnay - “a great food companion” with citrus and vanilla flavours.
