During the hectic Team Challenge in Episode 8, contestants had to recreate iconic SA dishes from some renowned restaurants - here's a little more about those establishments and the meals.
Deena and Thys were pretty successful at recreating the
DenningVleis recipe from
Biesmiellah in Bo-Kaap, which also has a bakery and a coffee shop - check out the super looking menu on their site (which does include the delicious DenningVleis in question).
Ilse and Manisha were sent to Langa and
Eziko Restaurant, which specialises in African tradional food but has a a selection of Western dishes. You'll also be doing the local community some good because Eziko was established to provide a basis for a training centre, and the profits from the restaurant go to maintain the school as well as to sponsor the students who enrol in the Cooking and Catering Centre. Try their legendary
pap and tripe!
The meal that spelled the end for Babalwa and Brandon was
Marais' chicken pie, a family recipe from the suitably-named
De Volkskombuis Restaurant in Stellenbosch, which specialises in traditional Cape cuisine in authentic Cape Dutch surroundings.
While the
waterblommetjie bredie that Jade and Sue-Ann faltered on was prepared by Naomi Basson, she was graciously hosted at
Goedemoed Country Inn in Paarl, a guest house combining the grace of previous centuries with all possible modern conveniences. They do do lunch and dinner but by prior arrangement only.
